Nora Fleming

Nora Fleming, how did you become a designer?
I studied graphic design. Through various stages, I discovered textile design and found it to be close to me.

Please describe your own process of designing.
The work always begins with generating ideas. Concept design is an important part of the process. I develop ideas by drawing sketches and studying the theme at hand from books. I choose the best ones from several drawings and I scan them onto my computer. I process the works with different techniques using the computer and I consider the patterns from point of view of composition. I also generate a world of colour. Finally, I print the works in full scale to see how they function in their setting.

Where do you find the ideas for your fabrics?
They’re in the air.

How would you describe your own style as a designer?
My objective is a combination new, old and surprising things. I would like my works to reflect both myself and the customer.

Who are your models or examples as artists or designers?
Henri Matisse, Dr. Seuss, Tove Jansson, Issey Miyake and Vuokko Nurmesniemi.

What is the most important quality of a designer?
Continuity.

If you could choose, where would you like to see a fabric designed by you?
In the next cult movie.

What is the best thing about your work?
Energy.

What inspires you?
Finnish nature is my greatest source of inspiration. I am excited by everyday beauty around us.

What do you dream of?
I dream of creating my own, distinctive visual world. I would like my contribution to add a little more fun and beauty to the world.
